Caring for your tableware

  • Stoneware

  • Porcelain

  • China

Stoneware clay is very strong. It is fully vitrified (the surface is made glassy and non-porous) which gives it strength, durability and chip resistance.

It can be safely used in:

  • Dishwasher - Whilst Denby tableware is safe to use in a dishwasher, constant dishwashing may result in discolouration of product over time. We recommend using low temperatures and liquid detergents
  • Oven & Microwave – for cooking and reheating food, oven safe to 250° . Please note: Using microwaves as a means of warming empty dinnerware can cause damage to both your dinnerware and microwave and is therefore not recommended.
  • Freezer – for storing food

Similar in strength to stoneware, porcelain has a more translucent body and is naturally a blue-grey white.

It can be safely used in:

  • Dishwasher - Whilst Denby tableware is safe to use in a dishwasher, constant dishwashing may result in discolouration of product over time. We recommend using low temperatures and liquid detergents.
  • Oven & Microwave – for cooking and reheating food, oven safe to 250° . Please note: Using microwaves as a means of warming empty dinnerware can cause damage to both your dinnerware and microwave and is therefore not recommended.

Some general tips and pointers for making the most of your Denby:
  • Even the hardest surfaces can be scratched: diamond scratches diamond. This can happen with all ceramic goods including your Denby. So please take care when stacking and handling your Denby as scratches can be more visible on coloured glazes.
  • All pottery and china can crack if exposed to sudden changes in temperature, no matter how strong it is, so please don’t take items from the freezer and put them straight into the oven or microwave.
  • Using microwaves as a means of warming empty dinnerware can cause damage to both your dinnerware and microwave and is therefore not recommended.
  • Please do not expose to direct heat sources such as the hob or grill.
  • All ceramic products can be affected by 'metal marks' on the surface of the item - in most cases these are not scratches but occur when metal rubs against the surface of the dish leaving a metal residue which doesn't disappear on normal washing. A cleaning product like 'Bar Keepers Friend' can help remove these marks:
  • Sprinkle Bar Keepers Friend onto a wet cloth or sponge.
  • Rub the surface of your item gently and rinse.
  • For more stubborn stains you can make a paste using a few drops of water and apply to your item, leave for one minute, then rinse thoroughly.
  • On heavily coloured or decorated glazes, we would always suggest a 'spot test' on the reverse of the item first to be sure, but this method should remove any metal marks in most cases.
  • Most items in our Denby stoneware and porcelain ranges are suitable for commercial use as well as domestic. For more details please click here.

Caring for cookware & homeware

Bathroom Accessories

Denby bathroom accessories are made with the same hardy clay as all of our stoneware, using the same techniques and glazes to ensure they are as durable as all of our Denby pieces.

To ensure your Denby bathroom accessories stay in great condition, we recommend following the advice below.

  • The items can be cleaned in a dishwasher but if hand washing we recommend using soft cloth or sponge and a plant based or eco cleaning product.
  • Using harsh and abrasive cleaning products that contain bleach or acid will result in discolouration, cause permanent marks or erosion of the glaze over time.
  • Do not use scouring tools such as metal brushes or abrasive sponges as they may scratch the surface of the glaze and cause permeant damage.

Pans

Denby pots and pans are designed to deliver incredible results and make cooking a pleasure.
  • Remove all stickers and labels, wash in warm soapy water and dry thoroughly before use.
  • Always match the size of the pan to the heat source, as gas stoves are not standard - smaller pans may not sit comfortably on supports.
  • Take care when handling always use an oven glove or mitt as handles may get hot.
  • Never heat up an empty pan.
  • To protect your pans we recommend using silicone, heat-resistant plastic or wooden tools in both uncoated and non- stick coated pans.
  • Never allow a gas flame to extend beyond the base of the pan; this may cause the sides and handles to overheat.
  • Use moderate to low heat and do not allow liquids to boil dry.
  • Excessive heat may spoil the appearance of the pans by causing discoloration of the surface.
  • Ensure work surfaces are suitable protected before placing hot pans down on them.
  • For best cleaning results, soak the pans and lids in warm, soapy water for a few minutes before washing.
  • Do not pour cold water into a hot pan; this can cause the bottom of the pan to warp or cause damage to coatings.
  • Do not store raw, marinating or cooked foods in the pans. Ingredients may cause damage to and/or discolouration of the surface.
  • PFOA Free. Non-tick coatings that are labelled PFAO free mean that safer chemicals were used in their production resulting in cookware that is both healthy and easy to use.
  • To protect and prevent damage to the surface, use only medium and low heats for all cooking. NEVER use high heats.
  • Use nylon, wooden, silicone or heat-resistant plastic utensils as metal may scratch the non-stick surface.
  • Do not cut foods directly onto the non-stick surface.
  • The maximum oven temperature for use with non-stick pans is 200°c/400°f/Gas Mark 6.
  • Can be used under the grill for short periods of time. Ensure that neither the lid or handle are placed directly under a grill.
  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth or wash with detergent with a brush or nylon pad.
  • Do not use steel wool or metal pads as these may scratch the non-stick surface of the cookware.

Bakeware

We have a wide range of high-quality bakeware, including carbon steel cake tins, muffin tins and cupcake trays covered by a 10-year guarantee
  • Suitable for use in all oven types up to 250°C/450°F/Gas Mark 9.
  • Not suitable for microwaves or use on hobs.
  • Suitable for use under the grill for short periods.
  • Use silicone, heat-resistant plastic or wooden utensils as metal may scratch the non-stick surface.
  • Fridge and freezer safe
  • Always use an oven glove or mitt when handling as surfaces will get hot.
  • Dishwasher safe, or hand wash with detergent and a brush or nylon pad. Do not use steel wool or metal pads.
  • Care is to be taken with cooking meat products at high heats to avoid over caramelisation and sticking to the pan.

Cast Iron

Denby Cast Iron comes in a range of sizes and colourways, making it the ideal multi-purpose addition to compliment your Denby serving pieces.
  • Oven safe up to 250°C / 482°F / Gas Mark 9.
  • Suitable for all heat sources.
  • For use on glass hobs, follow the manufacturer’s guidance. Don’t drag cookware across the glass.
  • Use heat resistant silicone, plastic or wooden utensils only.
  • Before first use, remove all product labels and wash in hot, soapy water.
  • Ensure cooking liquid or oil is added before you start heating the dish. Only blackened enamel (e.g. griddle pans) can be used dry.
  • For best results use medium /low heat which will allow the dish to heat up slowly and consistently at an even temperature.
  • Don’t use high heats to reach cooking temperature as this can overheat the dish.  After use allow to cool before placing in water otherwise the dish may thermal shock and permanently damage the enamel coating.
  • After cleaning, ensure fully dry and re- condition any blackened enamel surfaces with cooking oil to prevent going rusty. This includes the top rim of casseroles.
  • Don’t cut food directly on any enamel surface, or use any beaters or mixers in the cookware.
  • Cast iron is heavy, hard, and moderately brittle and may break if knocked or dropped.

Cutlery

Denby cutlery sets are made from 18/10 stainless steel to ensure lasting shine and durability
  • Dishwasher safe. Wipe with a damp cloth as soon as cycle is complete and dry immediately to prevent staining. Never use silver polish.
  • Stainless steel is resistant to marking and staining, but contact with direct heat and certain substances can lead to staining and pitting.
  • Salts, food acids, fats and meat juices and harsh detergents, including bleach are corrosive and can damage the cutlery.
  • Load knives in the dishwasher with the blade pointing downwards.
  • Direct heat can mark the metal.

Glassware

Our stylish glassware is designed to make your favourite drinks even more enjoyable.

  • Denby glass is designed by the team at Denby and then handmade and mouthblown for us by renowned glass factories.
  • The colour in Denby glass is created by rolling clear glass in coloured chips and melting them so that they fuse. The result makes the colour permanent and irremovable, and because it contains no lead.
  • Denby glass is safe for use in the dishwasher (except for coloured lustre glass).
  • Again we recommend the use of low temperatures and liquid detergents in the dishwasher.
